Bracadale Blitz: Big Impacts on the Isle of Skye

Back in May, we spent a few incredible days on the Isle of Skye taking part in the Bracadale Blitz  and what an amazing few days they were!

This epic three-day clean-up around Loch Bracadale was a true team effort. We joined forces with the amazing folk from Skye Beach Cleans, Scottish Islands Federation and the highlands and islands climate to tackle the plastic pollution littering this beautiful stretch of coastline. A huge thank you as well to the brilliant Ocean Recovery Project and representatives from MYrefactory, who were hard at work sorting and preparing plastics for recycling. We even brought home a haul of washed-up fish boxes to pass on to Ocean Plastic Pots for recycling into handles for their knives.

As always, these kinds of clean-ups are far from easy. The work is physically demanding, and the emotional toll of seeing the sheer volume of plastic washing up on our shores is real. But the SCCU crew gave it everything. Over three days, 10 volunteers dedicated an incredible 219 hours to beach cleaning, which is an outstanding commitment from everyone!

We were once again grateful to our wee boat Curlew, who allowed us to reach areas that would be otherwise very difficult to removed collected rubbish from.

With the support of local community members (who made us feel so welcome), the Highland council and the local fish farm for the skips, we cleared a massive five tonnes of waste from the coastline. That’s two full skips of rubbish removed, much of it wildlife-threatening debris and microplastic-producing materials and there was a significant amount sent for recycling.

Until next time, Skye
