For the third year in a row, the SCCU crew packed up our gloves, bags, and buckets and returned to the beautiful Isle of Luing, this time teaming up with the wonderful folk at Wild Luing (www.wildluing.com).
Over just two days, our dedicated team of volunteers clocked up 104 hours of beach cleaning. The result? More than half a tonne of rubbish cleared, that’s roughly the weight of a Highland coo or a leatherback turtle.

We were joined by Vicki from Scottish islands Federation, who carried out marine litter surveys alongside our coastal guardian volunteer Violet, helping us better understand what’s washing up and where it’s coming from. And out of the rubbish we collected, we were able to recover 13kg of materials to head of for recycling and reuse!
The weather? Classic west coast Scotland. Sunny one minute, lashing down the next. The team managed to squeeze in three swims between cleans, because if you’re going to be wet, you might as well make it intentional!

At the end of each long, soggy day, we were grateful to David, who generously let the SCCU crew use his house as a base for the weekend, providing the perfect spot to dry off, share stories and recharge.
Luing looks set to be an annual event and we look forward to our return!
