Celebrating Progress : SCCU’s Third Year of Cleaning on Ulva

Beach cleaning on Ulva has become a highlight for many in the SCCU crew. This marks our third year visiting this stunning island, and it’s incredible to see the fruits of our labour starting to take shape. With each visit, we not only grow more familiar with Ulva’s beauty but also witness the positive impact of our collective efforts. The weather may have been mixed, but our commitment to clearing plastic pollution from Ulva’s shores was unwavering! We estimate that our dedicated team removed around 3 ½ tonnes of rubbish over the weekend.

Our volunteers worked tirelessly, often in challenging conditions of wind, rain, and mud. Their hard work truly made a difference! The boat performed wonderfully, but we had to retire it for Saturday due to strong winds. This shift meant our team focused on beaches closer to base, and believe me, there was no shortage of rubbish to collect! A massive thank you goes out to @theulvaferry for their continued support of our trips. We’d also like to express our gratitude to farmer Phil for helping us transport gear, to the Ulva community and NW Mull Community Woodland Company for the use of the Bothy, to Bakkafrost for their support and to @theboathouseonulva for providing us with delicious ginger cake. And, of course, a heartfelt shout-out to all our fantastic volunteers who joined us over the weekend!

We’re already making plans to return next year and tackle even more of Ulva’s beautiful coastline. If you’re inspired and want to join us on our next beach cleaning adventure, drop us an email at kerriesccu@balancedhorizon.org

Together, we can continue making a difference!

Thank you once again to everyone who joined us this weekend. Your passion and commitment are what make these clean-up efforts so meaningful!
