Celebrating World Ocean Day: The Big Beach Clean 2023

litter gathered in Ayr

First of all we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who got involved in this years Big Beach Clean! It was amazing to see all the Facebook and Instagram posts of what everyone had managed to collect.

Thank you to our sponsor Caledonian Horticulture. Both for their support with the event and for sending a team out to do a beach clean in Ayr.

Expanding West and North

For the first time the Big Beach Clean included the west coast and we were delighted by the response. We had beaches cleaned in Ayrshire, Galloway, Helensburgh, Oban, and as far up as Lewis!

Next year we will be focusing on the coastline north of Glasgow and the Scottish Islands so please spread the word.

What are we finding?

The most common items groups on both sides of the coast are finding:

  • Rope and netting
  • Rigid plastic containers
  • Lobster creels
  • Plastic bottles
  • Cans

East coast groups are finding a lot of wet wipes and sanitary items after they are flushed down toilets.

Pick Up 5!

We like to remind people to pick up 5 pieces of litter every time you go to the beach (or for a walk!). If everyone did this it would have a huge impact on the amount of litter in our environment. Why not challenge yourself to pick up 5 pieces of litter on your next trip to the beach.

Upcoming Events

You can find details of future events on our Beach Blitz page. Our next beach clean event is on the Isle of Skye on the 7th – 8th July. We’re doing a sponsored 24 hour beach clean to raise money for a new landing craft boat. This will help us reach even more beaches to clean. More information on how to get involved can be found here, or you can sponsor us through our Just Giving page.

Big Beach Clean 2024
